Gift of a Shaman

Ecuadorian Shaman visits IthacaI recently had the opportunity to host an indigenous visiting shaman from Ecuador. Alejandro is a shaman and community leader of the Tsa’chila tribe in the lowland jungles region of Ecuador. We came together to have two events open to the public in Ithaca, NY USA.

The first event was a fire ceremony. I prepared the fire and met Alejandro and his friend and translator, Clay Martin. Clay brought him from Ecuador, where Alejandro had been his host father for years! The evening of the fire grew darker and cold, and a few people arrived. I asked it we should start the fire at the set beginning time, and the shaman Alejandro paused. He felt for the answer and said no, that more people were coming. Sure enough, within a half hour many more people arrived.

We sat around the unlit fire as dusk turned to darkness. Alejandro spoke of his life and community, and of our connection to the world, that the earth is our mother. Then we lit the fire and it burst into brilliant light and warmth. We came closer to the fire to feel its energy and to experience more. Alejandro spoke Spanish and his native language, Tsafiki, which means ‘true word’. Clay translated for Alejandro and you could hear the varying waves of laughter and reaction as the words were translated. The Spanish-speaking members at the fire would laugh first, then others would join in as the translation came though. It was wonderful. All of us present were attentive and honoring, thoroughly enjoying ourselves. In opening sacred space, we rattled, drummed and called in the elements and the four directions. About 40 people were present. Alejandro asked me for a blessing and cleansing, for his travels so far from home. After I did this, we held eyes in silent communication for a long time. What happened between us in that time went beyond words, it was a pure spirit connection.

Then an extraordinary thing happened...

Shaman Training ~ is it for Me?

Are there benefits to doing shaman training even when one has another path in life, and doesn’t want to become a shaman?

When I underwent my shaman training I studied alongside many wonderful people, from full-time moms, a hairdresser, small business owners, writers, artists and retired professionals. This work is profoundly life changing and empowering. Out of all the students who took these years of training with me, only 1% went on to become a shamanic practitioner like me. For me, it is my calling, it is what I’m meant to do. For others, it deepened the quality of their lives and shifted them out of old patterns that bound them. It created openings and opportunities to live at a higher level and improved not only their lives, but also the lives of the people around them. For as we heal ourselves, we heal each other.

NCAA Division 1 sports blessing and home blessing details, news article

Ithaca Susan Norton was called by Colgate University to bless the athletics facilities in December when things were not going well.  Bringing in a shaman is not your usual response when help is needed at an NCAA Division I athletic program.  But that's just what Colgate University did.  Colgate Associate Director of Athletics Jeffrey Falardeau, who described the school has having a open mind, said he thought Ithaca shaman Susan Norton would be the right...

Shamanic Services for Home, Office and Sports Facilities

One of my favorite specialty services is what is commonly called a home blessing or clearing, office blessing or sports blessing. What makes this work so powerful? It transforms old, stale or heavy energy and brings in a new blend of light and love along with specific qualities the owners especially desire. It is a custom service based on the individual needs of the client.

What is the difference between a Sacred Journey and a regular journey?

When you travel to a place that has special energy or vibration you can feel it right away.  There is Sacred Journey at Stonehenge Susan Nortonsomething
different. It can be a site like Stonehenge or a waterfall in the woods by your house. It is a place that calls to you. To stop and take note of what you're feeling.

When you go on a sacred journey, you set an intention to see, feel and sense these special sites on a more profound level. On a regular journey, people talk and take pictures, often posing by the site and moving on. A sacred journey is different because you take the time to create ceremony and do activities together to increase this connection. It's delightful! The group energy and intention actually heighten the experience for all.

With a good leader, one enters 'sacred space' where protection is assured and you can deeply let go and feel the energies and receive messages from the divine, known by many names. On a recent journey, we drummed our way into the sacred site, used bells and meditation to access the higher reality and performed a water ceremony. There was time to spend alone, still being held in sacred space with the energy of the group around us.

When I was at Stonehenge on a sacred journey, a fellow traveler discovered a high energy portal between two massive stones, and shared this finding with me. I had a profound personal experience there that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

What is Opening Sacred Space?

In Opening Sacred Space (also known as Opening the Four Directions) I set a clear intention as to what I'm calling in.  Home Blessing working with crystals Susan NortonIf it is for a client in a healing session I ask that only those energies, elements or guides come in that are for the highest good of that client.

In this work, there is an opening to spirit, to another world. If I don't set a clear intention in opening sacred space, anything could come in from that other world. Not all of that would be helpful. By working in sacred space, I am assured of working with protection and receiving the highest guidance for the client.

Blessings, Susan Norton

What is shamanism?

Shamanism is about being in ayni, in balance. As we come into right relationship, the world around us changes. All energy is connected. As we care for and heal another person, animal or the land, we heal ourselves. As we heal each other, we heal the world. We are all one.

The shamanism in which I am trained comes from the mountains of Peru. This work is done with deep integrity and only with permission. I open sacred space by 'Opening the Four Directions' and work with great protection from this place. I invite in Spirit (known by many names) for the highest good of the client or space that I am blessing.
